Multan: The Kashmir-American Council would hold a seminar on 'Right of Self Determination' in Geneva, Switzerland. Talking to The News on telephone, the council executive director, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, added the seminar would be held during the second session of the United Nations Human Rights Council that would begin on September 18 to October 6, 2006 at Geneva. Internationally known experts have been invited to present their views about the applicability of the principle of self-determination in the twenty-first century, he also said. Dr Fai maintained self-determination of people is a basic principle of the UN Charter, which has been reaffirmed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and applied countless times for the settlement of international disputes. He elaborated the International Court of Justice has considered several resolutions on de-colonisation process and noted subsequent development of international law regarding non-self governing territories as enshrined in the UN Charter made the principle of self-determination applicable to all of them. This opinion establishes self- determination as the basic principle for de-colonisation, he further said and added this concept seems to be as old as of government itself and was the basis of French and American revolutions. Mentioning the principle of self-determination and the upholding of international peace and security are inseparable, KAC head held that is why denial of this right to the people of Kashmir has brought India and Pakistan to the brink of nuclear catastrophe. Dr Fai further added such has been explicitly recognized by the UN for Jammu and Kashmir in two UN resolutions, which was accepted by governments of both the countries.
