Separatists Slam EU Member's Report On Kashmir

9 December 2006

New Delhi: Separatist organizations, including both factions of Hurriyat Conference, criticized the report of European Parliament member Emma Nicholson on Kashmir, claiming it lacks credibility as the parliamentarian was a state guest during her visit to Jammu and Kashmir this year. Both factions of Hurriyat headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the leader of the Democratic Freedom Party, Shabir Ahmad Shah, termed the report on Kashmir by Nicholson as 'biased and unrealistic,' a PTI report said here. They claimed that the members of the delegation led by Nicholson met none of the separatist leaders nor did they try to take stock of the situation on their own. The delegation came here as state guests and enjoyed the government's hospitality, they said, and urged the European Union to keep all these facts in mind and reject the report submitted by the emissary. The report of Emma Nicholson had adversely affected the European Union's credibility as it was devoid of a factual position, the separatists said in separate statements. Nicholson visited Jammu and Kashmir a few months back and submitted her report to the EU recently revealing her experience and the situation in the Valley. Meanwhile, the chairman of the hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today said the ongoing movement in the Valley would continue. 'We believe in almighty Allah...The situation in the world does not remain the same. Whatever seems impossible today, Allah will make it possible tomorrow,' Geelani said while addressing a Friday congregation at Habbakadal in Srinagar city.
