2006 was a year of confusion. Everybody involved in the Kashmir problem - the Kashmiris, India and Pakistan - claimed they wanted a settlement of the problem but nobody could agree on what needed to be done. As a result, instead of a peaceful resolution of the problem, the problem persisted. And so did terrorism and heavy handed state response. The victim was the common Kashmiri. A mjaor issue of the year was Md. Afzal Guru, who was sentenced by the Supreme Court in New Delhi for his involvement in the bombing of the Indian Parliament in 2001. The court judgement resulted in violent protests in Kashmir and Afzal's execution was deferred. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf made a few new proposals on Kashmir but they were all rejected by New Delhi. The three parties agreed to keep talking. Hopefully the year 2007 would be one of resolution.
