Four killed in Kashmir militant attack

Srinagar: Four people, including three soldiers and a civilian, were killed and a trooper critically wounded in a militant attack near Jammu and Kashmir's Tral town.A defence spokesperson here said guerrillas opened indiscriminate fire at a patrol party of the anti-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR) in Aragam village adjacent to Tral town, 45 km from here, at around 9.30 p.m. Thursday.'In the initial militant attack, a junior commissioned officer and two soldiers were killed instantly,' Col A.K. Mathur said.A civilian, Mohammad Afzal, returning after offering prayers in a mosque was also killed in the exchange of fire.Troops of 42 RR took positions and returned the fire. Reinforcements were also rushed to the spot.An army trooper injured in the attack has been admitted to hospital. Troops of RR conducted search operations in Aragam and senior police officials visited the spot early Friday. No guerrilla group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
