Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council Wednesday passed the 'Shariat' bill within five days of its passage in the legislative assembly. The lower house of the state legislature had passed the bill Feb 9. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Hameed Karra tabled the bill in the upper house Wednesday and was passed by it unanimously without a debate. The bill brings laws governing Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir at par with the Indian Shariat Act 1937, applicable to Muslims in India. The state passes its own laws because of its special status under Article 370, which allows it to have its own constitution. Indian laws are not automatically applicable to Jammu and Kashmir, unless endorsed by the state legislature. With the passage of the bill in both the houses, the law ministry will send it to Governor Lt General (retired) S.K. Sinha for assent
