4 militants surrender in Kishtwar, one succumbs

Srinagar: Army and police today achieved a major success against militancy when four top ultras of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen including a ‘district commander’ surrendered before them at Thathri in Doda district along with a large quantity of arms and ammunition. A militant, injured in an encounter with troops at Bounjwah, Gandoh on March 31, succumbed to his injuries in a forest area and his body was recovered today. The militants surrendered after local people including some village heads succeeded in persuading them to give up arms and lead a peaceful life. Of four militants who surrendered, one of them had been graded as an ‘A’ category ultra. SSP Doda Manohar Singh said the ultras surrendered before senior officers of Army and police at Thathri this morning in the presence of some former Panchayat members and other prominent persons of the area. They have been identified as Ashiq Hussain son of Ghulam Mohd Bhat, a ‘district commander’ of HuM, Mohd Yasin son of Nazir Ahmed Bhat, both residents of Tanta, Gandoh, Altaf Hussain son of Farooq Ahmed Wani R-o Kani, Trankal and Abdul Kareem alias Kinu son of Mohd Hussain R-o Gounthal, Gandoh. Keenu, according to official sources, had earlier also surrendered before security forces in 2003 but after few months had again joined the militancy. All four militants pledged not to join militancy again in the presence of security officers and local people. Instead, they vowed to disclose to security forces the hide-outs of the militants and lead operations against them, sources said. At the time of surrender, the militants handed over one AK rifle with three magazines and 100 rounds, one Insas rifle with two magazines and 108 rounds, one pistol with one magazine and eight rounds, two wireless sets, one binocular and one hand grenade. All four surrendered militants are being questioned. In another incident, security forces and police today recovered dead body of a militant, who was injured in an encounter at Kithar, Bounjwah in Gandoh area of Doda district on March 31 but had managed to escape. He has been identified as Showkat Ali Wani son of Bashir Ahmad Wani R-o Tanta, Gandoh, an activist of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit. Injured militant is reported to have succumbed to his wounds in Bounjwah forests after his escape. Body of slain militant has been sent for post-mortem. Police recovered a consignment of ammunition and explosives during a search operation at Mastandara in Bafliaz area of Poonch district. Recoveries include two UBGL grenades, one AK magazine, one pistol magazine, 40 AK rounds, four pistol rounds, one hand grenade, one antenna and one battery charger. Security forces recovered another consignment of explosives from Kirni in Poonch this afternoon which include one AK-47 rifle, one 7.62mm mouser pistol, 52 Chinese grenades, 29 UBGL grenades, two Kenwood radio sets and war like stores. A Havalidar Sagar Mal was injured in an accidental grenade blast at Thanna Mandi in Rajouri district today.
