Srinagar: In a major success, Army and police today gunned down five top militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Hizbul Mujahideen in an encounter at Navapachi area in Doda district. A large quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives have been recovered from the scene of gun-battle. DIG Udhampur-Doda range Lalat Indu Mohanty said troops of 11 Rashtriya Rifles and police launched a search operation at Tatta Pani in upper reaches of Navapachi under the jurisdiction of Marwah police station in wee hours of this morning. The operation was based on a specific information developed by Army and police that five top commanders of three outfits were holding a joint meeting to co-ordinate their activities and step-up militancy in Doda district. The militants had taken shelter in two dhoks at Tatta Pani. As troops and police reached close to the hide-outs the militants opened firing, which was replied by the security personnel. A heavy exchange of firing between the two sides continued for more than four and a half hours in which all five militants were killed, official sources said. While four militants were killed in and around the dhoks, their fifth associate jumped into a nullah after being hit by a bullet in a bid to escape but died immediately thereafter. Bodies of four militants have been recovered from the spot. Body of fifth militant was lying in the nullah several feet deep and was unlikely to be recovered, sources said. Out of five slain militants, identity of three of them has been established as Imtiyaz, Abu Buzana and Gulfam, all commanders of three different outfits. Identity of two others is yet to be established. Security forces or police didnít suffer any casualties in the operation. Recoveries made from the scene of encounter include three AK rifles with 10 magazines, one pistol with two magazines, six grenades and one I-Com wireless set. Sources said the militants were operating in different parts of Doda district for last one and a half year. For last two months, they had shifted their bases to upper reaches of Marwah in view of a series of operations launched jointly by Army and police. According to sources, the militants were planning a co-ordination among LeT, JeM and HM outfits to step-up their activities in Doda district. Their killing has been a big blow to the three outfits, they said.
