Eight Militants Killed In J&K, Infiltration Bid Foiled

Srinagar: Eight militants were killed as security forces foiled an infiltration bid and fought separate gun battles with ultras in Jammu and Kashmir, where one person was killed and ten others were injured in two explosions in Srinagar and Poonch districts today. Security forces guarding the Line of Control noticed a group of militants attempting to sneak into this side via Kangra Gali in Balakote sector of Poonch district last night, a police spokesman said. In the ensuing encounter, four militants were killed. Four AK assault rifles, 13 magazines, a pistol with two magazines, a rocket projectile gun, an under-barrel grenade launcher, five UBGL rounds, eight hand-grenades, two wireless sets and two diaries were recovered from them, he said. In another gun battle, two Hizbul Mujahideen militants identified as Ghulam Mohammad alias Mehmood and Sher Khan were killed by security forces during search operations at Visran in Gandoh area of Doda district today, the spokesman said. Two self-loading rifles, two magazines, 10 rounds, a mobile phone and a wireless set were recovered from them. Two more Hizbul militants were killed in a gunfight with security forces at Qazipora village in Bandipora district today. A girl was also injured in the encounter. One person was killed and two others were injured when a land-mine exploded at Bufliaz in Poonch district today, the spokesman said. The three were working in the field when the blast took place, he said adding, the injured were hospitalised. The spokesman said eight pedestrians, including two women, were injured when militants hurled a grenade towards a CRPF picket at Habbakadal in downtown Srinagar today. The grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside, he said adding, the injured were hospitalised. Militants also hurled a grenade towards a CRPF picket at Bohrikadal chowk in downtown Srinagar this evening. However, the grenade failed to explode and was later neutralised by the experts of bomb disposal squad, the spokesman said. He said security forces recovered four UBGL grenades, five hand-grenades, two kgs of explosives, 260 rounds, an AK magazine, four detonators and a mine during search operations at Dardsun-Shumnag forest in Kupwara district. In another operation, police recovered a 12-bore gun, an AK magazine, 12 rounds and a wireless set from Sarfan Nallah Dranan in Gandoh sector of Doda district.
