6 LeT grenade throwers arrested in Bhadarwah

Srinagar: Police today arrested six militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit, who were involved in a series of grenade attacks in Bhadarwah and other areas of Doda district. With their arrests, the militantsí plot to trigger more blasts in Doda district have been foiled. The arrested militants have confessed their involvement in a number of grenade attacks and admitted that they were planning to throw more grenades in Bhadarwah town and outskirts in next few days, SSP Doda Manohar Singh said. Arrested militants have been identified as Fareed Ahmed Sheikh, 22, son of Abdul Qayoom Sheikh, a resident of Basti, Bhadarwah, Waseem Hussain Bhat of Dandi, Bhadarwah, Mehboob Ahmed of Puneja, Bhadarwah, Nazir Ahmed of Thanala, Bhadarwah, Shah Nawaz of Beoli, Doda and Riaz Ahmed of Koti, Doda. All of them were affiliated with LeTís Abu Umar group. Umar was involved in the killing of DySP Shailey Singh at Udrana, Bhadarwah. A police party which busted the network of LeTís grenade throwers comprised Inspector Ashwani Kumar Sharma, SHO Doda, Inspector Ajay Jamwal, SHO Bhadarwah and Sub Inspector Shiv Krishan, Incharge Operations, Bhadarwah. The team worked under the supervision of DIG Udhampur- Doda range Lalat Indu Mohanty and SSP Doda Manohar Singh. Fareed Ahmed Sheikh has confessed his involvement in a grenade blast at Doda Bus Stand on May 24 this year. The grenade had, however, missed the intended target and was later defused by police. Fareed was first in the group of six to be arrested by police. During his sustained questioning, he disclosed identity of his five other associates who were also involved in grenade throwing incidents across Doda. From the possession of Fareed Ahmed, police recovered one grenade which he had been given by Lashkar top brass to throw at Bhadarwah police station or a CRPF installation. On the information provided by Fareed and hide-outs identified by him, police arrested his all five associates. During questioning, Waseem Hussain Bhat admitted having thrown a grenade at Seri Bazaar, Bhadarwah on June 24, 2006 in which 14 persons including six CRPF personnel, one SPO and seven civilians were injured. Waseem disclosed that he was motivated for grenade throwing by Abu Tallah, a former Ďarea commanderí of LeT for Bhadarwah. Mehboob Ahmed and Nazir Ahmed used to work on the dictations of Fareed and Waseem. Shah Nawaz and Riaz Ahmed were also motivated by Abu Talla to work for the LeT outfit. Arrested militants had their area of operation in Bharat, Gundna and Sazan areas also. They revealed that Abu Umar alias Khalid, a Ďdivisional commanderí of LeT was motivating local youths to join militants and execute selective killings and grenade attacks. During questioning, the militants also disclosed that Khalid had given pistols to some militants to eliminate the youths who had either been recruited or had joined recruitment process of IRP and police. Sources said police have intensified searches to apprehend the militants tasked to kill fresh police recruits.
