Cop, Surrendered Ultra's Brother Shot Dead

Jammu: As two more top militants, both commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen, surrendered before police and Army in Doda today, militants gunned down brother of a surrendered militant and a police constable and injured a woman at Moila, Gool in Ramban district last night. Official sources said a group of militants struck at village Moila under the jurisdiction of Gool police station in Ramban district late last night and attacked the houses of a surrendered militant Anwar Saleem and a police head constable Khurshid Ahmed Malik. Unable to found Anwar Saleem in the house, the militants opened firing on other house inmates causing injuries to his brother Mohd Saleem and Saleem's wife, Parveen Begum. While Saleem succumbed to his injuries, Parveen Begum was later shifted to local hospital from where she was referred to Medical College hospital here. Simultaneously, two other militants sprayed bullets on Khurshid Ahmed Malik son of Mohd Sultan Malik, a police head constables posted at Gool police station, who was posted in Gool and had come to his house on leave, killing him on spot. The militants escaped after the killings, sources said. Police parties under the supervision of SSP Ramban Basant Rath rushed to the spot. Security personnel also reached the site of killings and a joint search operation has been launched to trace the militants. However, no arrests have been made so far. Two Hizbul Mujahideen commanders today surrendered before Rashtriya Rifles and Delhi Police in Doda district along with arms, ammunition and explosives. Surrender by two Hizb commanders came within a week of surrender by 10 Harkat-ul- Mujahideen (HuM) ultras, who had laid down arms before Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in Doda. Without these surrenders, police had claimed that Harkat outfit has been wiped out from Doda. SSP Doda Manohar Singh said a Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riaz Ahmed alias Faisal son of Ghulam Mustafa R-o Tiller, Marwah surrendered before troops of 11 Rashtriya Rifles and Doda police at Marwah this morning. He handed over one AK rifle, three magazines, 65 rounds and one pouch. Faisal was an active militant since 2001 and was involved in a series of militant activities across Doda district. Another 'A' grade Hizbul Mujahideen commander Shahbaz alias Gazi son of Mohd Hanief R-o Bharthi, Gandoh surrendered before troops of 26 Rashtriya Rifles and Doda police at Gandoh today alongwith one AK rifle, three magazines, 90 rounds, three wireless sets and one pouch. Shahbaz was operating as a militant since 1998 and was wanted by police in a number of militancy incidents. DIG Udhampur-Doda range Lalat Indu Mohanty said more militants were approaching police and security forces for surrender in search of better lives. Security forces recovered three 80mm mortars, seven claymore mines, eight detonators, two grenades and cortex wire during searches from Mendhar forests in Poonch district.
