HUJI Comdr Among 3 Militants Killed, 2 Held

Srinagar: Three militants, including a commander, were killed and an another surrendered while as two ultras were arrested from the Srinagar city. This apart, 16 persons were injured in grenade explosion across Kashmir valley overnight. A Defence Ministry spokesman said the 36 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) had launched a search operation at Nich Mawar forest in Dooru area of South Kashmir district of Anantnag this morning, following a tip-off about the presence of militants there. During the operation, an encounter ensued in which a self- styled company commander Yousuf Bimla alias Rizean of Harkat-ul- Jehad-e-Islami (HUJI) militant outfit was killed. Another militant Shahnawaz Naikoo alias Nazadings, who was fully trapped by the security forces, surrendered during the operation. Two AK rifles, five AK magazines, 143 AK ammunition rounds, two hand grenades and one radio set were recovered from the slain and surrendered militants. The spokesman said that in another operation by 6 Grenadiers, two militants were killed in an fierce encounter, which ensued after a search party was attacked by the ultras hiding in general area Kelan. One AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants. Security forces arrested two militants alongwith two AK rifles at Karan Nagar in the city last night. The spokesman said that on the basis of information about likelihood of cache of arms and ammunition in Rakisin Forests, Dawar, search party of 312 Field Regiment recovered one AK rifle, three AK magazines, 65 Ak ammunition rounds, one pistol and three grenades. The spokesman said that at least 16 people were injured in a grenade blast in North Kashmir last night. They said unidentified militants hurled a hand grenade near a cold drink shop at Hajan in this district at 2045 hours. Sixteen people were injured in the blast, sound of which was heard in the entire area. The injured were admitted to a hospital where the condition of six of them is stated to be critical. Meanwhile, police in its drive against the menace of drug abuse today arrested 15 smugglers and destroyed Cannabis crop spread over hundreds of kanals of land in south Kashmir district of Anantnag. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anantnag said, a special drive was launched by police against Cannabis cultivation in village Dupatyar in Anantnag early this morning. During the drive, Cannabis crop, spread over hundreds of kanals of land, was destroyed in presence of a Magistrate. He said that during this crackdown, 15 persons including smugglers and land owners who were cultivating Cannabis were arrested and cases have been registered under NDPS Act in Police Station Bijbehara. He said 60 more villages involved in Cannabis cultivation have been identified and similar action will be taken against them in phases. Anantnag Police has already destroyed Cannabis and poppy cultivation spread over thousands of kanals of land, this year, besides recovering large quantities of drugs from the district. Scores of people have also been booked under NDPS Act for growing and smuggling of intoxicants.
