Srinagar: A top Hizbul Mujahideen militant was shot dead by police in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday afternoon. Farooq Ahmad Sheikh alias Ilyas, self-styled commander of the outfit, was shot dead when he tried to attack a police search party at Namblibal village of Pampore, 16 km from Srinagar, official sources said. Acting on a tip off, a police party cordoned the village and were moving towards a house when the militant came out in open and hurled a grenade towards the security personnel. However, the grenade failed to explode and the militant was shot dead by the police before he could open fire, the sources said. A pistol and a hand grenade were seized from the slain militant. The grenade hurled by him was later defused by experts. Hailing from nearby Khrew area, Sheikh was one of the most wanted militants and was active for the last several years, the sources said. 'He was a Category A militant and was involved in a large number of incidents including killings,' a source said.
