Colonel Vasanth Cremated

Bangalore: The mortal remains of Colonel V Vasanth, who was killed in the Uri Sector in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday in an encounter with the militants, was cremated at Kalpalli crematorium here today with full military honours. Former Karnataka Chief Minister M Veerappa Moily, minister for Health and Minister incharge of Bangalore district, R Ashok and Member of Parliament Tejaswini Ramesh were present and paid their respects by placing wreaths on the body. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Chiefs of the Army, General Officer Commanding- in-Chief, Headquarters Southern Command, GOC ATNK and K Area, a Defence press release said. Brigadier Clement Samuel, Commander, Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, Commandant MLIRC, Belgaum, Commandant MEG and Centre, Commandant CMP Centre and School, Commandant Parachute Regiment, Commandant Service Selection Centre, Commandant 106 Infantry Battalion, Commandant ASC Centre and College, Commandant Pioneer Corps Training Centre paid floral tributes. Senior police officers and senior retired Army officers, including Capt G R Gopinath, Chairman and managing Director of Deccan Aviation, also paid floral tributes, the release said. A group of soldiers drawn from the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre fired three times in the air and reversed their arms as a mark of respect to the Colonel. Earlier in the morning the body was kept at the residence of Vasanth, where members of the armed forces, both serving and retired and a large number of civilians, paid floral tributes.
