LeT Commander Abu Darda Shot Dead In Reasi

Jammu: An 'area commander' of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was tonight gunned down by Reasi police and Army at Nakka Pathri in Gulabgarh area of Mahore in Reasi district while a SPO was injured, a powerful IED was defused and a suspect was arrested in other militancy related incidents in the region today.SSP Reasi J L Sharma said troops of 59 Rashtriya Rifles and Mahore police tonight surrounded a natural hide- out at Nakka Pathri after developing a very specific information that LeT 'area commander' Roshan Din alias Abu Darda was hiding there. Army and police had been hunting Abu Darda for past three days following information that he had come down to plains with an intention to carry out subversive activities. Darda was finally trapped in the hide-out tonight and shot dead after a fierce one and a half hour long gun-battle. Army or police didn't suffer any casualties in the operation. Commanding Officer (CO) 59 RR and SDPO Mahore led the operational team. Recoveries made from the slain militant include one AK-47 rifle, four magazines, 89 rounds, one I Com wireless set, one cell phone, one binocular and one dairy. Abu Darda son of Ghulam Mohd, a resident of Dharamsal, Gulabgarh was an active militant since 2000 and was involved in a number of militant activities in Gool-Gulabgarh-Mahore belt. His killing was a major setback to Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, sources said. Sources said a SPO Ved Raj of Prem Nagar Doda, posted at Kastigarh police post and on guard duty at Saras Bupa bridge, was shot at and injured by two militants this morning. The militants opened firing from atop a hill and escaped. Injured SPO was evacuated from the bridge and rushed to hospital by police where his condition was stated to be stable. Police have launched a search operation in the area to trace the militants. Security forces detected and defused a powerful 7 kg weight IED at Larkoti in Poonch this afternoon. The IED was capable of causing extensive damage, sources said. A suspect Nasir Ahmed, 30, son of Abdul Rehman R-o Relan, an activist of Hizbul Mujahideen, was apprehended by security forces from Mahore and handed over to police for questioning. Security forces recovered four hand grenades, one wireless set, nine rounds of .303 rifle and one AK magazine during a search operation at Dignari Kral Gali in Gool area of Ramban district. One AK rifle, five magazines, 320 rounds, 18 detonators, one wireless set and 307 pencil cells were recovered by police and security forces from Magnar nullah in Arnas area of Reasi district.
