Army Operation In North Kashmir Continues For 3rd Day
3 October 2007
Srinagar: A gunbattle between security forces and militants in Tangmarg area of North Kashmir, which has so far claimed two officers, continued for the third day today, a defence spokesman said. As per the intelligence received, there were at least five militants inside the Ringiwalla Khall, he said, adding the firing has stopped which had been continuing since Monday night. He said it would be too premature to comment on the number of militants killed, and on whether all the ultras have been neutralised. Search operations were going on and once the exercise was complete, a true picture of the situation was expected to emerge, the spokesman said. He said two army majors K P Vinay and D R Raman were killed in the gunbattle with militants while two jawans were injured. Major Raman succumbed to injuries this morning while Major Vinay was killed in the initial firefight yesterday. The injured jawans have been hospitalised and are stable, he added. At least five houses were destroyed in the exchange of fire between the two sides but so far there were no reports of civilian casualties. Highly placed sources said a group of nine militants had infiltrated from across the line of control in Gulmarg sector Sunday night. They had made their way to Ringiwalla Khal where they were confronted by the troops of 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR).
