Soldier killed in Kupwara encounter

Srinagar: Militants have killed a soldier in an encounter in Lolab valley of Kupwara district in north Kashmir today. Informed sources said that troops of Rashtriya Rifles 28 Bn were in movement in Dooraswani forest area in Sogam when militants from a vantage position opened fire on the patrol party. One soldier, who was identified as Rifleman Vijay Kumar of Himachal Pradesh, was fatally hit and he died on the spot. Even as troops retaliated, all the militants, believed to be two to four in number, managed to escape. A follow up search operation did not yield anything. Sources said that last night too an encounter had taken place between militants and troops of RR 18 Bn in Lalpora area of Lolab valley. Two to three militants, who exchanged gunfire with troops, managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Sources said that an unidentified person lobbed a hand grenade on the house of one Abdur Rashid Tantray S-o Mohammad Sultan Tantray at Tujjar Sharief, in Sopore area, late last evening. It exploded on the premises and caused minor damage to doors and windows of Tantray's house. However, nobody was physically harmed. Sources said that Tantray was an employee of Tehsil office in Sopore. In Sopore again, sources said, Police detected a live IED inside hotel Newlite, the site of fidayeen attack of 8th November, and later defused the same with the help of bomb disposal squad.
