2 militants killed in Baramulla, 2 arrested

Srinagar: Two militants have died in an encounter with Police and security forces near Sangrama in Sopore-Baramulla belt in north Kashmir today. Informed sources said that troops of RR 52 Bn, CRPF and J&K Police, launched a joint operation over a specific information at Chinad, near Sangrama, in Baramulla outskirts in the afternoon today. According to the tip off, two militants had been hiding at the house of one Ghulam Hassan Lone. As troops zeroed in on the identified hideout, both the holed up militants opened fire at 1445 hours and engaged the armed forces in a fierce gunbattle. Sources said that troops destroyed Lone's house, killing both the militants. Even as only one dead body had been recovered till late tonight, official sources said that yet another militant's dead body was likely to surface from debris in the morning on Wednesday. They said that both the militants were believed to be members of Jaish-e-Mohammad guerrilla organisation. One of them was believed to be a local Kashmiri militant and another a Pakistani national. However, both remained unidentified. A Defence spokesman today sought to clarfy that yesterday's operation in Tral area had been conducted by troops of RR 31 Bn, not RR 42 Bn as mentioned erroneously in a section of media. Top wanted Hizbul Mujahideen 'company commander' Tariq Ahmed Ahangar alias Anees-ul-Islam had died in that gunbattle. Meanwhile, an encounter took place between militants and security forces in Beerwah area of Budgam district but no one was injured in the incident. Police raided the house of Bashir Ahmad Dar at Rassu last night following information about the presence of militants there, a police spokesman said today. On seeing the police team, the ultras opened fired at them which was retaliated, the spokesman said, adding the militants managed to escape from the spot. The troops recovered a UBGL grenade from the area, he added. Two Over Ground Workers of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfits were arrested by police in Handwara area of Kupwara district today, the spokesmsan said. A joint police party from Handwara and Srinagar apprehended two OGWs at Waripora village in the area, the spokesman said. The arrested duo were identified as Gh Mohi-ud-Din Bhat and Javid Ahmad Mallah, he said, adding both were working for HuM and LeT outfits. A militant hurled a grenade towards a security force picket near Bus Stand at Sopore. However, it exploded at a distance without causing any damage.
