Srinagar: A Kashmiri militant of Hizbul Mujahideen has died in an encounter with Army in Kokernag area. Informed sources said that troops of Rashtriya Rifles 36 Battalion conducted a search operation near Matti Gawran in Kokernag area of Anantnag district. While the operation was underway, one armed militant was spotted as he took out his AK-56 rifle, fired upon troops and made unsuccessful attempt to escape. He was killed in the gunbattle and was later identified as Mohammad Arif, resident of Aishmuqam. Officials claimed that the militant killed in the shootout was a local cadre of Hizbul Mujahideen. One AK 56 rifle was claimed to have been recovered from his possession. Hizbul Mujahideen has, meanwhile, said in a statement here today that Chairman of Municipal Committee Pattan was trying to browbeat his fellow Councillors with a false impression that he was close to the militant outfit’s 'Divisional Commander' and other militants. The spokesman has sought to make it clear that HM had no liaison with the Chairman of the civic body. He said that certain vested interests had been trying to misuse the title of his organisation and claimed that they had no connection with the outfit. He asserted that the organisation would not allow any body to meet personal ends while claiming to be in proximity with the organisation.
