Srinagar: A soldier of the 24 Rashtriya Rifles shot himself dead in an Army camp in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. An Army spokesman said Dharminder Kumar used his service weapon to kill himself. 'He was critically injured from the gunshot, but died before he could be taken to hospital,' the spokesman said. The suicide came despite measures adopted by the armed forces to lower the stress among troops in the insurgency-hit state. The soldier was attached to the Rashtriya Rifles camp in Wussan. It was not immediately known what drove the soldier to suicide. More than two dozen security force personnel have committed suicide in the valley in the last one year. A dozen others, including some senior officers, have fallen to the bullets of their colleagues during the same period. Family disputes and work stress are stated to be the main reasons for suicides and fragging in the Army.
