All help for J&K development, says Manmohan
26 April 2008
: “We will not leave any stone unturned in lending maximum help and support to the people of the State. I promise you that the State government and the Centre will pay maximum attention to the development on multiple fronts.” He was addressing a public meeting here after dedicating to the nation the 390-MW Dul Hasti hydroelectric power project on the Chenab and laying the foundation stone for district offices complex. The Prime Minister said the recommendations of the C. Rangarajan Committee on economic development of the State were under active consideration and some of these had already been implemented. Some key issues identified included natural resources, investment in the power, roads, education, health and social sectors, creating a congenial environment for private investments, balanced development of the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir and ensuring sufficient funds for development. Dr. Singh said the State had potential for producing 14,000 MW but only 1,865 MW was harnessed. Harnessing the untapped power would change the economic profile of the State. Referring to the inordinate delay in the completion of the Dul Hasti project, the Prime Minister said development projects must be executed within the time frame to avoid cost escalation. He asked people to work with greater dedication to ensure the development of the State and the country. Dr. Singh saluted the people of Jammu and Kashmir for their struggle to strengthen democracy. The government tried to involve all groups in the peace process. Various sections, regions, religions, parties and communities were invited to Round Tables where they gave their suggestions.
