The religious and political groups had accused the government of disallowing Muslims to offer prayers in a Masjid which has a historic importance. Mirwaiz Hurriyat had recently threatened to mobilise opinion against such measures from the government at the international level by writing to OIC and other organisations which are having an international presence. He also accused the army unit of 33RR of thrashing the students of Darul Uloom Lalpora in Kupwara. Quoting a public delegation, he said the security personnel of 19RR entered into the Darul Uloom during night and started thrashing the inmates apart from throwing away their belongings without any rhyme orreason.
