Srinagar: Scores of candidates, who contested the 2008 assembly election unsuccessfully, on Tuesday staged a demonstration here to press for the security cover. The protestors said that authorities withdrawing the security cover after elections had made them vulnerable due to which their lives had been put at stake. “We were assured security and residential quarters by the Election Commission of India at the time of filing the nomination papers, but ECI has not kept its word. In fact the security which had been given to us has also been withdrawn,” said Muhammad Aslam Phuphoo, chairman of Jammu Kashmir Muttahida Awami Conference, a newly floated party of the defeated candidates. “The condition in the valley was not favorable to hold elections. It was us who met the people individually and motivated them to take part in the process,” he said, adding, “ If our demands are not met we will go to Delhi and stage a protest in front of PM’s house.
