International Winter Games To Commence In Kashmir

Srinagar: Around 250 skiers, including 50 foreigners, will take part in the three-day International Winter Games being held at Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir from Monday. Organized by All India winter games federation, the event is a step to promote tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, Director Tourism Farooq Ahmed Shah told one of the news agencies. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will declare open the event. The events include cross country skiing competition from Aferwat hill top to Gulmarg, followed by Alpine skiing and salalam, Shah said, adding, foreign players from different countries have already arrived to take part in the events. The competition will be followed by a two-day National Snow rugby in which 14 teams from different States of the country, comprising 130 players will take part from March seven, Shah said. The State government plans to upgrade infrastructure in Gulmarg to meet the international standards. The international event comes close on the heels of 'Snow festival', an annual feature, organised by the State Tourism Department in Gulmarg last month.
