Srinagar: Two Indian soldiers and two Islamic militants were killed in a prolonged gunbattle in Indian Kashmir close to Pakistan-controlled territory, the army said Wednesday. The clashes have been some of the fiercest in recent years and follow warnings from Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba of fresh attacks against Indian troops. A series of running gunbattles last month along the border left eight soldiers and 17 militants dead. Kashmir has been in the grip of an insurgency against Indian rule since 1989 that has left over 47,000 people dead by an official count.
