Srinagar: The rise of regional parties is a positive development in imparting to the political system a true federal character, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said on Saturday. 'The supremacy of a single party had defeated the federal objectives of the Constitution and converted governance into a unitary arrangement that was insensitive to regional aspirations,' the People's Democratic Party patron said addressing poll rallies at Wachi and Shopian assembly segments of Anantnag parliamentary constituency on Saturday. The coalition era had resulted in the empowerment of weaker sections of society and allowed them entry into power structure at crucial decision making forms, he said. He said the needs of the diverse nature of our country was better reflected in the coalition of regional forces at the Centre. Mr. Sayeed said the Kashmir model of autonomy in its original form was best suited for all states of the country while Jammu and Kashmir for its peculiar nature deserved autonomy plus. On April 15, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said that India, which is battling terrorism, naxalism and big economic problems like poverty needs a party with a national perspective to govern the country and deal with these problems firmly.
