Kashmir Movement True Jihad: Geelani

7 May 2009

Srinagar: The chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Geelani has termed the ongoing movement for right to self-determination in Kashmir as Jihad, saying it was within the tenets of Islam. Geelani strongly condemned a statement linked to Maulana Sufi Muhammad, in which he had stated that Jihad was not mandatory in Kashmir as people there were not demanding Sharia. “Kashmiris are fighting for their respect, identity and rights which is also part of Jihad. I maintain that the ongoing movement for right to self-determination is in accordance with tenets of Islam,” Geelani said. The president of International Union of Scholars, Dr Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, on Wednesday gave a fatwa that freedom is fundamental right of every human being and militants wanted to implement the Islamic system in Kashmir. “Kashmir was the part of Muslim Ummah and the whole Muslim community was like one body and it was its duty to help the Kashmiris for getting freedom from the Indian aggression,” he has stated. Imam Kaaba, Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdullah Asabil and Kuwait’s religious scholar, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Kattan, have also justified the struggle of Kashmiris. Hailing the statements, Geelani said the sacrifices of Kashmiris are being acknowledged worldwide.
