Murder Charge Added In Shopian Case

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday registered a murder case in connection with the death of two women, whose bodies were fished out of stream in Shopian where normal life remained disrupted for the 11th day on Wednesday. Official sources said the decision to add section 302 of Ranbir Penal Code (murder) was taken in consultation with the independent investigating team headed by Justice (retd) Muzzafar Jan. The development comes three days after the police had added 376 (rape) in the case. The bodies of Asiya (17) and her sister-in-law Nelofar (22) were found in Shopian, 52 km from here, in the last week of May after they went missing from an orchard. Forensics tests had said analysis of the vaginal swab slide of the two women had presence of semen. In the meantime, shops and business establishments, banks, government offices, educational institutions remained closed and all modes of transport remained off the road in Shopian. Life in the remaining part of the Kashmir valley was limping back to normal after the separatist amalgam, Hurriyat Conference, called off their strike against the deaths on Tuesday.
