J&K: Public Prosecutor, Bar Association Oppose Bail Of Police Official

30 July 2009

Srinagar: The Public Prosecutor and Bar association filed their objections in the court of Principal District and Session Judge, Shopian, against the bail application of four police personnel accused of not preserving evidence in connection with the Shopian rape and murder case in south Kashmir. They opposed the bail of Superintendent of Police (SP) Javid Iqbal Mattoo, Dy SP Rohit Basgotra, Station House Officer (SHO) Shafiq Ahmad and Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdul Karim, who had been suspended on the recommendation of the one man inquiry commission headed by Justice (retd) Muzaffar Jan. Justice Jan in his report said that the officials failed to preserve the evidence in connection with the murder and rape of two woman during the intervening night of May 29 and 30, which later evoked massive protest across the valley. The reply filed against the bail application said that the police officials were in league with the main culprits in the case. Two of the four police officials, Mattoo and Basgotra, had approached the Supreme Court for bail. However, the Court rejected their application and asked them to approach local court here. The argument on their bail application will continue tomorrow also before the judge issues the final decision on the bail applications.
