Srinagar: In twin strikes in the heart of the city, suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists fired on police and CRPF personnel, killing one policeman and seriously injuring two central paramilitary jawans here today. The first incident took place at Regal Chowk area when militants using silencer-fitted pistols targeted CRPF personnel of 132 Battalion deployed outside Pamposh Hotel, the venue of a district Congress convention, officials said. The terrorists managed to escape in the melee that followed, despite CRPF personnel laying siege to the area. The attack triggered panic among shopkeepers in the nearby Regal Chowk and Residency Road, prompting them to pull down their shutters and rush to safety. The two personnel, Firdous Ahmed Bhat and B B Ghosh, were rushed to Soura Medical Institute where their condition was stated to be critical and doctors were carrying out surgery. CRPF spokesman P Tripathy had earlier said that one of the personnel had succumbed to his injuries, a statement which he later withdrew. Barely minutes after the first attack, a Jammu and Kashmir policeman, Mohammed Shafi, was killed by terrorists at Batmaloo near Lal Chowk.
