Jammu: About half a dozen workers of National Conference were injured when police resorted to lathicharge after a large number of NC activists attempted to barge into People’s Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters at Gandhi Nagar today. Reports said that large number of NC workers gathered at the party headquarters at Shaheedi Chowk and took out a protest rally towards PDP’s office against the baseless allegations of the PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beigh against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. However, the agitating NC workers were stopped some distance short of PDP office by police personnel, who were already deployed there in anticipation of any violent act by the NC workers. Shouting slogans against the PDP leadership, the demonstrators torched the effigy of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and Muzaffar Hussain Beigh. During massive protest, some of the NC leaders and workers managed to break the police cardon and rushed towards the PDP’s office where several leaders and activists of Mehbooba Mufti’s party were already present. The activists of both the parties shouted at each other but before the situation could turn ugly, police resorted to lathicharge on the NC workers to prevent the possible clash. In the lathicharge, about half a dozen NC activists including son of sitting MLA, Bimla Luthra sustained injuries. All were immediately taken to Government Medical College and Hospital. Expressing anguish over the lathicharge, the NC workers moved towards the National Highway and blocked the vehicular movement near the Government College for Women Gandhi Nagar. They demanded immediate action against a police officer who first resorted to cane charging on NC workers. Taking swift action to pacify the protesters, senior police administration attached Sub-Inspector Ajit Singh, Incharge Digiana Police Post, to the Police Lines against pending inquiry following which road blockade was lifted. NC provincial youth president Surinder Singh Bunty, senior leaders Rajesh Bakshi, Surinder Singh Jamwal and Ayub Malik while expressing concern over the police lathicharge said that NC workers were holding protest in peaceful manner. Meanwhile, provincial National Conference under the leadership of Rattan Lal Gupta staged a protest demonstration at Bohri Patta Chowk, Talab Tillo. The agitating workers torched the effigy of PDP president and Muzaffar Hussain Beigh and demanded stern action against them for giving malicious statements. Women Wing of party in a meeting held under the leadership of Vijay Lakshmi Dutta decided protest against PDP’s baseless allegations against Chief Minister.
