1 BSF Jawan Dead In Firing At LOC

19 December 2009

Srinagar: One BSF jawan died and two were injured when they came under heavy fire on the line of control (LoC) at Salutri in the Poonch sector of Jammu. The incident occurred a day after the defence minister said that 30,000 troops have been withdrawn from Jammu and Kashmir. Lieutenant Colonel Biplab Nath, defence spokesman at Jammu, said the firing came from a nullah close to the LoC and started at 10.30am. Constable Mukesh Chand of the 47 Battalion of the BSF succumbed to his injuries. The target of the firing was Kranti Post manned by the BSF. 'There is a post called Daku on the other side and a stream also runs nearby. There was heavy volume of firing for half an hour,' said a senior officer. This is the second such firing on the border in a week. On December 13, Pakistani 'infiltrators' opened fire on the BSF troops at Ballar post in Ram Nagar-Samba sector of the international border in Jammu. It is the same post where BSF DIG OP Tanwar was killed in an IED blast last month. The IED was planted by the Pakistani infiltrators before retreating to their base.
