Two Jaish militants shot dead in Pulwama18 February 2010

SRINAGAR: Security forces got another success against militants in the Valley today as two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) ultras were killed in an encounter at a village in Pulwama district in South Kashmir. A joint search party of police, Army and CRPF cordoned off village Shankarpora in Pulwama district last evening following receipt of information about presence of at least two militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) there, official sources said. The security forces launched house to house searches but did not find the militants till late in the night. The cordon continued and the searches were resumed this morning. As the security forces were zeroing in on the house, where the militants were hiding, the ultras opened indiscriminate firing on them. The security forces returned the firing, triggering off an encounter that lasted several hours. The militants were asked to surrender but they refused the offer, the sources said. Security forces used mortar shells and tear smoke shells in an attempt to flush the ultras out of the house but in vain. The security forces launched a final offensive and the encounter ended with the killing of both the militants, they said adding the house in which the ultras were hiding was destroyed in the gunbattle. SSP Pulwama Kifayat Haider told EXCELSIOR that the slain militants belonged to Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit. 'Two bodies of the slain militants and two rifles - one AK-47 and one AK-74 - have been recovered from the scene of encounter,' he added. Haider said the security forces were shifting through debris of the house as the local residents said there were three ultras hiding there when the encounter began. 'We will continue the searches till dusk and resume tomorrow morning, if need be, as the debris of the house is large,' he said. Asked about the identity of the slain ultras, he said it was being ascertained. Reliable sources said both the slain militants were locals and identified them as Javaid Ahmad and Sajjad Ahmad. Security forces have managed to eliminate six militants in last four days. Two Jaish militants were killed in an operation in Chandoosa village of Baramulla district yesterday while two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) ultras were eliminated in a gunbatle at Qoimoh in Kulgam district on Monday. In another anti-militancy operation, security forces recovered large cache of arms and ammunition from an orchard in Chachiloora area of Budgam district. They said a joint operation was conducted by Budgam Police and 2 Rashtriya Rifles in the orchard land at village Chachiloora, falling under the jurisdiction of police station Magam. During the search operation, one pistol, two pistol magazines, 38 revolvers, two radio sets, 10 AK 47 magazines, 20 sniper rounds and 499 AK rounds were recovered from a cave-like hideout, the sources said. Meanwhile, a CRPF constable tried to commit suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle at Nehru Park in the city and was battling for life at a city hospital. Constable Pankaj Kumar of 144 CRPF, attached with Battalion Headquarters camped at Hotel Pakhtoon Nehru Park, attempted suicide when he fired upon himself with his service rifle and got critically injured. The injured constable has been hospitalized by the concerned unit.
