HuM Killed Basharat: DIG4 May 2010
Baramulla: Although Harkatul Mujahideen (HuM) stated that its top commander Basharat Saleem was killed in an encounter with troops at Machil in Kupwara district last week, police Tuesday maintained that he was killed by militants of the outfit. “Police has put cash reward of Rs 10 lakh on Basharat Saleem’s head. Had he been killed by government forces, they would have found it privilege to accept the reward and promotions,” DIG North Kashmir Abdul Qayoom Manhas told media persons here. He said police or any other security agency did not kill Basharat. “Had we killed him, we would have happily accepted the responsibility as he was having many rewards on his head,” he said. He said they received intelligence input on April 28 morning that HuM District Commander Noman took three of its cadres including Basharat to Kupwara. “Later, Basharat was accused of being police informer and shot dead,” he claimed. Manhas, however, didn’t confirm the death of militant as the body has not been recovered yet. “Since Basharat’s family is mourning his death, so we believe that he may have died. But until his body is recovered we can’t confirm his death,” he said. DIG said reports about Basharat’s death in Machil encounter are false as the slain militants were infiltrators and not exfiltrators. “We killed three militants in Machil, who tried to infiltrate into Kashmir. Basharat was not among them,” he added.
