JAMMU: A hardcore militant of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, who was operating in Doda and Kishtwar districts for last 17 years, was today gunned down by police joined by security forces in upper reaches of Behota in Marmat area of Doda district this morning. Three police personnel were injured as they slipped from the hills during the operation. In another success, Reasi police, joined by troops of RR and CRPF today recovered a large quantity of explosive devices during two search operations in Mahore. Recoveries include six wireless sets, three IEDs, two pistols and a haul of explosive devices. DIG Doda-Ramban range Munish Kumar Sinha said a police team launched a search operation at village Behota in Marmat area under the jurisdiction of Doda police station last night after developing information about the presence of Hizbul Mujahideen ‘section commander' Abdul Qayoom Wani alias Irfan Rahi son of Alam Din Wani, a resident of Magota in the area. The police party, supervised by SSP Doda Prabhat Singh, cordoned off the village last night. Troops of 10 Rashtriya Rifles and 33 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) joined the operation to strengthen the cordon. In the morning, the 42 year old militant was spotted in Behota forests and was challenged to surrender, Mr Singh said, adding the ultra instead opened firing on the security personnel and tried to escape deep into the forests. In retaliatory firing, he was gunned down by the police and security personnel. While there were no casualties on police or security forces side in the operation, three police personnel slipped from the mountains into gorge while trekking towards the forest area where the militant had taken position and were injured. Two of them have been identified as Ram Pal and Bitta. All three have been hospitalized in stable condition. One AK-47 rifle, three magazines and a pouch were recovered from the slain militant, who was operating in Doda and Kishtwar districts for last 17 years and was involved in a series of subversive activities. He had been rated as an ‘A’ category militant as a number of First Information Reports (FIRs) had been registered against him. Irfan Rahi had recently been designated as 'section commander' of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit. His killing has delivered a big blow to Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, Mr Singh said. Meanwhile, Army, police and CRPF today destroyed two hide-outs of the militants in Mahore area of Reasi district and made huge recoveries. DIG Udhampur-Reasi range Gulzar Singh Slathia said Reasi police, joined by troops of 61 RR and 59 RR and 126 CRPF destroyed two hide-outs of the militants at Chonch Dhara and Hari Wala forests in Mahore. Police parties in the operation were led by SSP Reasi Anand Jain and ASP Mahore Sujit Kumar. Recoveries include two Chinese pistols with three magazines, three IEDs, 56 pistol rounds, five wireless sets, five wireless set antennas, five hand grenades, 15 detonators, 10 electronic detonators, two kg explosive material, two RPG rounds, one mobile set, 52 Pika rounds with three belts and gelatine sticks. However, no arrests have been made during the searches. .
