Jaish Cmdr Among 2 Killed5 September 2010
Srinagar: Two militants, including a Divisional Commander of Jaish-Mohammad, were killed in separate encounters at Poonch and Handwara areas of Jammu and Kashmir. As per details, following inputs of presence of two militants, the Special Operation Group of Police and troops of 37 Rashtriya Rifles cordoned off Thera village in Bhati Dhar area of Mendher in Poonch district at about 11 pm Saturday. However, the contact was established only at 6.30 Sunday morning when militants were offered to surrender. Sources said militants had taken shelter in a house belonging to one Khaliq Hussain for the last two days. They said after evacuating all civilians from the house, the troopers and police warned the militants to surrender, but getting no response, they initiated firing which was retaliated by the militants. The encounter continued for about seven hours. Sources said a Pakistani militant identified as Omar Khatab and claimed to be Divisional Commander of JeM, was killed while his associate Mohammad Zubair, son of the house owner, was captured alive. In the encounter, an Army trooper Sajan Singh received serious bullet injury and was airlifted to Command Hospital Udhampur. Police has also arrested house owner Khaliq Hussain and his another son Saddam Hussain for questioning. Sources said the militants were using mobile SIM cards of Airtel and the same are being sent to experts for ascertaining their numbers. When contacted, Senior Superintendent of Police Poonch Manmohan Singh confirmed killing of one JeM top militant. He said they have also arrested his close associate Mohammad Zubair who had recently joined the outfit. The SSP said the slain Pakistani militant was operating in the area for the last seven months. The SSP said they have recovered two AK 47 rifles, 2 magazines, one grenade, one Chinese pistol, 2 Nokia mobiles, 2 pouches, one radio set and Rs 62,000 from their possession. Additional Superintendent of Police Poonch Jugal Kishore, while confirming that police has recovered two SIM cards of Airtel Company from the militants, said the numbers are being ascertained by experts. Meanwhile, a militant was killed in a deadly encounter between militants and Army in the forests of Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Colonel Vineet Sood of Army’s Srinagar-based 15 Corps Headquarters told Rising Kashmir that the encounter started Saturday evening. “Soldiers came in contact with a group of militants at Hafruda forests in Handwara. The militants opened fire on them, triggering an encounter,” he said. He said heavy exchange of fire continued till night. One militant has been killed so far, he said adding the slain militant's identity was being ascertained. Sources said Army’s 6 RR and 21 RR was on job. The militants were four in number. Three of them, who are still alive, were hiding in the forests and were firing on Army from various directions prolonging the encounter, they said, adding the area where encounter is taking place is densely forest area. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the remaining militants had managed to escape. However, Army maintained the gunfight was on. “The encounter is on and there is no causality from our side,” Col Sood said.
