PDP Calls For Joint Council For All Parts Of J&K28 May 2011
Srinagar: Opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today called for establishment of a joint council for all parts of Jammu and Kashmir including those across the Line of Control (LoC), saying it was necessary to pursue joint projects for a prosperous future. 'If representatives of the two parts of the state can meet as they have been for many years now in different countries and cities of the world to discuss their mutual affairs, why should the establishment of a permanent institution in the shape of a joint council be seen as unrealistic,' Mehbooba said addressing a party workers meet in Handwara area of Kupwara district. 'If we have to get over the bitter past, there was no alternative to lifting the siege around Jammu and Kashmir and allowing the state to interact with the Pakistan-administered part through a creative agenda of trade, development and joint projects in sectors like power, tourism and environment,' she said. PDP was pursuing a campaign for opening of routes linking the state across the LoC right into China, Iran and Central Asia, she said. Mehbooba claimed the ruling National Conference had failed to contribute to the emerging political scenario in the state and had instead adopted a stance unfavourable to democratic functioning and competition. 'It is unfortunate that the state's oldest party has lost its political moorings and exposed itself completely among the people as a party that only was interested in power at any cost,' she claimed.
