Jammu: Like Leh, Kargil district of Ladakh region also elected majority of candidates in the Panchayat elections unopposed as 78.2 per cent electorates exercised their right to franchise in 15th and penultimate phase of polling held today across nine blocks of three regions of the State involving four districts of Shopian, Kargil, Kishtwar and Doda. With today’s voting, Panchayat elections in all 10 districts of Jammu region have been completed successfully. In the last phase scheduled for June 18, polling will be held in Gurez and Tullail blocks of Bandipore district besides Leh and Kargil. Two blocks of Kargil would go to polls on June 27. Out of a total of 1.16 lakh voters eligible for voting today, 91,531 turned up for polling, official sources said. Highest turnout of 82.1 per cent was recorded in Warwan block of Kishtwar while lowest turnout was also reported from same district’s Dachan block where only 70.7 per cent people cast their votes. Voting percentage in other blocks included Bhaderwah, Doda (80.9), Marwah, Kishtwar (80.8), GM Pore, Trespone, Kargil (72), Shaker Chiktan, Kargil (80), Sankoo, Kargil (80), Kargil (77) and Keller Partly, Shopian (76). Polling in 15th phase was scheduled for 150 Sarpanch and 1003 Panch constituencies. However, 26 Sarpanches and 556 Panches had already been elected unopposed while no nominations were received for 35 Panch segments, 32 of them in Keller Partly in Shopian district. Polling was finally held for 124 Sarpanch and 412 posts of Panches. Polling by and large passed off peacefully. Results of majority of seats, for which the election was held, had been declared till tonight. The election process for 15th phase would conclude tomorrow. Marwah, Warwan and Dachan, the three remotest and mountainous blocks of Kishtwar district recorded a heavy turnout notwithstanding the fact that the areas still had presence of some militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen outfits. Warwan and Marwah recorded 82.1 and 80.8 per cent polling while Dachan accounted for 70.6 per cent votes. Election officials along with ballot boxes and other material had reached well in advance in the three blocks. They would return to Kishtwar only after declaring all results of three blocks. Marwah had 12 Panchayats, Dachan 9 and Warwan 7. Police had made tight security arrangements for the elections. Besides police, para-military personnel had also been deployed due to sensitivity of blocks. Polling in Doda’s Bhaderwah block, which had highest number of 42 Panchayats in today’s election, also passed off peacefully. DIG Doda-Ramban range Manish Kumar Sinha and SP Headquarters Doda Mohammad Arif Reshu supervised security arrangements for the polling process. In Kargil block, seven out of 20 Sarpanches and 112 out of 137 Panches had been elected as unopposed. In Sankoo block of Kargil district, three out of 13 Sarpanches and 72 out of 98 Panches were elected uncontested. Shakter Chiktan block of Kargil was no exception. In this block, seven out of nine Sarpanches and 54 out of 60 Panches had won without any contest. In Trespone (GM Pore) block of Kargil district, five Sarpanches from a total of nine and 62 Panches from a total of 71 had been elected uncontested. Two Sarpanches and 84 Panches in Keller Partly block of Shopian district, 26 Panches in Marwah, 32 in Dachan, 14 in Warwan and 100 in Bhaderwah had also been elected unopposed. For 35 Panch constituencies, there were no candidates. Thirty-two Panch segments remained uncontested in Keller Partly block of Shopian district followed by two in Kargil and one in Sankoo. In Marwah and Bhaderwah, one Sarpanch each were elected unopposed. A total of 404 candidates were in fray for 124 Sarpanch constituencies. Only, two of them were women. For 412 Panch segments, 905 candidates were in fray including 266 women. Out of a total of 40,286 electorates in Bhaderwah block of Doda district, 32,604 exercised their right to franchise. In Keller Partly block of Shopian, 24,277 votes were polled from a total of 31,943. In Kargil block, 8059 voted were polled from a total of 10,466 while in Sankoo block of Kargil, 2735 people turned up to cast their votes from amongst 3418. In Shaker Chiktan block of Kargil, 6913 votes were polled from 8649 while 1387 votes were cast at Trespone, GM Pore block of Kargil district from 1927. In Marwah, Dachan and Warwan blocks of Kishtwar district, 6353, 5949 and 3254 votes were polled from out of a total of 7857, 8407 and 3961 votes respectively.
