Urban Local Body Elections In September: Omar Abdullah15 July 2011
Srinagar: After successful conduct of Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir, chief minister Omar Abdullah today announced holding of urban local body elections in the state after Ramzan, the Islamic month of fasting, in September this year. 'We intend to hold the elections after the month of fasting (Ramzan),' Omar said chairing the Srinagar district development board meeting here. He said housing and urban development department has been asked to finalise the programme for conducting the polls. Omar said government wants all the three-tiers of democratic institutions to function effectively to ensure good governance and involvement of grassroots level public representatives in the development and plan formulation processes. The fasting month of Ramzan will conclude in the last week of August. 'Establishment of urban local bodies and municipal corporations is the next target of the government this year after conducting the panchayat elections in the state,' he said. The chief minister also approved the total resource commitment of Rs 90 crore for Srinagar district for 2011-12 that includes the district annual plan allocations and additionalities.
