Omar: NC Will Discuss Resolution On Afzal Guru4 September 2011
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that a solution to the political issues of the State was on the anvil. The National Conference would discuss a resolution seeking clemency to Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru, moved by an Independent MLA. Talking to journalists, Mr. Abdullah asked all political leaders to pursue this sincerely. “I have repeatedly made it clear and will continue to advocate that the basic political issues of the State cannot be resolved by economic measures or progress on the development front,” he said. The successful tourism season, which attracted over six lakh visitors and an equal number of Amarnath yatris this year, did not solve the political problems even as it largely helped the economic betterment of the people. Mr. Abdullah said that the NC's Legislature Party would discuss the Afzal Guru issue before the Assembly session started on September 26. “We will have a Legislature Party meeting which will be headed by president Farooq Abdullah and decide on the issue. The meeting will deliberate on the resolution of the independent MLA S.A. Rashid and then the Speaker will give the decision,” he said. Mr. Rashid, who represents the Langate constituency in Kupwara district, had moved a resolution in the Assembly seeking clemency to Afzal Guru. The Chief Minister lashed out at the BJP which described him as ‘irresponsible' after he compared Afzal Guru's death sentence with that of Rajiv killers in his tweet. “Who are they (BJP) to stop me from tweeting or expressing my comments?” Referring to the strike calls given by the separatists, Mr. Omar Abdullah said they had no right to snatch the livelihood of the people.
