Cong rally attacked by youth in Bandipora11 December 2011

Excelsior Correspondent Srinagar: The Deputy Commissioner Bandipora and dozens of Congress party workers were injured when Congress rally came under attack at Bandipora in North Kashmir this afternoon while senior Congress leaders and Ministers including Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Professor Saifudin Soz escaped unhurt. Scores of vehicles carrying Congress workers and leaders including Saifudin Soz and Ministers were passing through the town on their way to Kuloosa in the outskirts of town when they were attacked by scores of youth who pelted stones on their vehicles. Around 20 Congress workers were injured and several vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting. Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Manzoor Ahmad Lone’s vehicle also came under attack and its window panes were broken when he was returning to his office after the rally was over. Lone received minor injury in the stone pelting while as Minister for Health and Horticulture Sham Lal Sharma and Minister for Medical R S Chib Education and Professor Soz escaped unhurt. The Congress leader and former Minister Usman Majid blamed opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the attack on Congress rally. He said that around 30 workers of the PDP attacked their rally when it was passing through the town. He said that dozens of party workers were injured in the attack. He said that attack on the rally led to its disruption as over 2000 party workers failed to reach the venue. The Deputy Commissioner Bandipora described it as a minor incident and Superintendent of Police Bandipora, Bashir Ahmad Khan said that it was a minor clash between two political parities. He said that persons responsible for the trouble have been identified but no one was arrested. However, sources said that Police detained separatists People’s Freedom League chief organizer Muhammad Altaf Khan. Later while addressing the rally at Kuloosa village, the PCC chief said that their United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre is strengthening its ties with Pakistan and it will have direct bearing on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Soz said that Congress party is at the forefront of improving relations with Pakistan. He said that more cross LoC routes will be re-opened for the benefit of the people living along the dividing line. Soz said that Centre is also strengthening the dialogue process with the people of the State. He assured the rally that Panchayats will be empowered so that the democracy reaches the grass root level. He said that Sarpanchs and Panchs will identify the developmental works that are to be carried out in the villages. The PCC chief said that Congress party has now become vibrant force in Kashmir and people register their grievances with its leadership without any inhibitions. Soz said that the response of the people towards the party is because of the services rendered by its leaders and workers. He said that Congress leaders are accessible to the people and that is why it is becoming a vibrant force. He expressed satisfaction over the functioning of his party. He said that party cadres would help to resolve the problems faced by the people. Minister R S Chib assured the people that the youth selected for training in Nehru Yuva Kendra would be regularized and said that he has taken up the matter with the Union Sports Minister. Senior leaders of the party Mohammad Muzaffar Parray, Gulam Nabi Monga, Bashir Ahmad Magrey, Abdul Gani Khan and Mohammad Amin Khan also spoke on the occasion.
