Militants Kill Ex-militant

Srinagar: Militants this evening killed a former militant in South Kashmir where he was running a shoe shop and in North Kashmir's restive Sopore area one person was injured in a grenade attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker. The Deputy Inspector General of Police South Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, told Excelsior that a 30-year old former militant, Munawar Zaman Malik son of Mashkoor Malik was fired upon by militants in Arwani Chowk, Bijbehara in district Anantnag this evening. Kumar said that militants fled after firing at him. He said that Munawar was critically injured and was rushed to Srinagar hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and conducted searches, however, no one was arrested. The DIG said that Malik had joined militancy in 2000 and was arrested in 2003 by the security forces. He was released in 2006 and was running a shoe shop where he was gunned down by militants this evening. Militants this evening also fired a grenade towards a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in north Kashmir's Sopore area of Baramulla district. Sources said that militants fired a grenade towards 179 Battalion camp of CRPF in Sopore town injuring a civilian Faizan Ahmad. The boy received minor splinter injuries. He was given first aid in the hospital and later discharged. Police, CRPF and 22-RR of Army rushed to the spot and cordoned off the Iqbal market area. They conducted searches, however, no one was arrested.
