Electoral Rolls Published, J&K Voters Reach 72.25 Lakh

Jammu: The Election Department today published final electoral rolls for Jammu and Kashmir taking total vote strength of the State for the first time above 7 million mark to 72.25 lakh. The electoral rolls were scheduled to be published on October 1 but were deferred for 15 days in view of floods in the State. Official sources said after nearly three months long exercise of summary revision of electoral rolls, the total voters of the State have reached 72,25,559 including 37.94 lakh males and 34.31 lakh females. In Parliamentary elections held in Jammu and Kashmir in April-May, the total voters were 69.33 lakh approximately. During summary revision, the Election Commission has added 2.59 lakh new electorates and deleted 1.44 lakh. As many as 92,332 first time voters will be eligible to exercise their right to franchise in the Assembly elections, whenever they are held. The Election Commission has deleted 1.44 lakh electorates during summary revision including West Pakistan refugees, who were not eligible to exercise their right to franchise. Rest of the deletions included the voters, who have died. The publication of electoral rolls was mandatory for holding Assembly elections in the State.
