Srinagar: An Army man and two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in a gunfight in Pulwama district of south Kashmir this evening. Police sources said the slain militants had been identified as Afaq-ullah Bhat, a resident of Karimabad village in Pulwama, and Abdul Mannan Dar, a resident of the Amarbugh area in adjoining Shopian district. There was, however, no official confirmation about the group affiliation of the militants. The Army man killed in the encounter is yet to be identified. 'I am on the job and will get the details of the martyred Army man soon,' said an Army spokesperson. As per police reports, the Drubgam area of Pulwama district was cordoned off around 5.30 pm today, following intelligence inputs regarding the presence of militants in the area. A senior police officer from Pulwama district said the Drubgam area was cordoned off by personnel of the Special Operations Group of the police and the Rashtriya Rifles. 'The militants were located and a contact was established with them. As the militants felt they were cordoned, they started to fire indiscriminately,' the police officer said. The fire was duly retaliated, resulting in an encounter, he added. The gunfight stopped for more than two hours during which the security personnel conducted searches in the area. 'The militants were again located and fire was exchanged, resulting in neutralising the militants,' the police officer said. 'We have retrieved both bodies.' The police said two rifles and some ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. Both slain militants had been active since early 2015. Meanwhile, search operations continued in the area as the security forces suspected the presence of more militants in the area. Searches were being carried out at the time of filing of this report.
