Srinagar: Five militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) including their commander were killed in a fierce gun battle in village Drugmulla in North Kashmir's Kupwara district today while two Army men were injured. Sources said that they were Fidayeen and had recently infiltrated into Kashmir and one of their members was killed in Zunreshi forests of Kupwara early this week, on Monday while the others fled under the cover of darkness. However, security forces were tracking their movement and were trapped early today after they got information about their presence in the house of one Mohammad Sayeed Shah. A police official said that gun battle started at Chack Drugmulla near Hatmulla area this morning after a joint operation was launched by Army's 47 RR, 41 RR and Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police. The official said that the security forces were tracking these militants for last two weeks and especially since Monday when one of their associates was killed in Zunreshi forests of Kupwara and these five militants fled from the cordon. The official said that security forces cordoned off the village early in the morning and first asked the residents of the area to move to safer places before they launched an assault against the militant group. The officer said that the additional reinforcement of Army's 9 PARA joined the operation as militants were trapped in the house. Security forces used mortars to blast the house where the militants were trapped. The officer said that five militants were killed in the gunfight that lasted for about nine hours. He said that two soldiers of Rashtriya Rifles were also injured in the gun battle and they were immediately shifted to military hospital Drugmulla where from they have been referred to Army's Based hospital in Srinagar for specialized treatment. The injured soldiers have been identified as Pandu Rang Mahadev of 41 RR and Atul Kumar of 47 RR. The troops recovered 5 AK rifles, one UBGL thrower, four UBGL grenades, 2 wireless sets, 15 magazines, matrix sheets, pouches, one pistol, one pistol magazine and pistol and AK ammunition. Sources said that the group infiltrated last week from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and were first spotted in Zunrishi Chowkbal forest area of North Kashmir's Kupwara district on Monday. Army and police launched an operation against them during which a gun battle broke out in which one of their associates was killed and other members managed to escape. Sources said that the members of the group were on way to Lolab to establish Jaish base there. However, they were continuously being chased by the Army and they failed to accomplish their mission. Last week security forces arrested a JeM commander Abdul Rehman who along with four other militants had infiltrated in January this year. The group was tasked to prepare a Fidayeen module to carry out Fidayeen attack in Kashmir. Rehman and his associates were trained at Balakote training camp in PoK for three-four months. Then in January they infiltrated into Kashmir and were on Fidayeen mission. An Army officer said that the Jaish is trying to set up base in Kashmir for last two years but the security forces have continuously put pressure on them.
