Militant, Soldier Killed In Machhil Sector

Srinagar: A soldier and a militant were killed in a fierce gun battle while five soldiers injured in Machhil sector of North Kashmir's Kupwara district since yesterday and Army has launched a massive operation against the militant group. The gunbattle began yesterday morning after Army's 56 RR intercepted a militant group of 7-8 members at Katwara forest area near Z-Gali in Machhil sector. The group is believed to have infiltrated this week only. Militants opened fire on the Army after they were challenged by the troops, triggering an encounter. Five soldiers were injured yesterday in intermittent firing that took place between the militant group and Army. The injured soldiers have been identified as Sepoy Suraj Kumar, Sepoy Nitesh Kumar, Sepoy Lakhan Singh, Sepoy Lakashman Das and Sepoy Nikhil. Sepoy Lakashman Das is stated to be in critical condition as he sustained bullet injuries in his chest. Last night, one more soldier Signalman Ajay Singh Choudhary was critically injured in militant firing. Choudhary, 24, a resident of Rajasthan, was immediately airlifted to Army's 92 base hospital where he succumbed to injuries today. Additional reinforcement of para-commandos and other Army men form other units have been rushed to the area and vast forest area has been cordoned off. This morning the joint team of para-commandos and 56 RR launched the search operation and recovered a militant body from the forest area. One AK-47 rifle and other warlike stores were also recovered from the dead militant. Army has also pressed into service sniffer dogs and choppers to track the other members of the militant group who are believed to be hiding inside the dense forest area. In the meantime, at least three civilians were injured in two blasts at Shopian district of South Kashmir today. The first attack took place at Shopian police station and the second one at Batpora Chowk in Pulwama. Three persons were injured at Batpora Chowk. The injured has been hospitalized. In South Kashmir's Qoimoh area of Kulgam district, four persons were injured in clashes amid shutdown against the alleged ransacking of houses yesterday after firing on under construction of SOG camp. Residents said after the firing on SOG camp, the SOG personnel later around 11 pm ransacked the houses of Tauseef Ahmad Sheikh and Abdul Majid at Rampora in Qoimoh. Both Tauseef and Majid are said to be militants. Today a complete shutdown was observed in Qoimoh against the alleged ransacking during which clashes erupted between locals and security forces in which three persons were injured.
