Srinagar: A day before Pakistan's acclaimed Sufi singer Amjad Sabri was shot dead, a sufi-rap music video was released on 101 India website; India's first Sufi-rap mix music, according to a Time report. The video released online is titled 'Like a Sufi' and has already gone viral on social networking sites. Muhammad Muneem, a Kashmir-based engineer and member of a Sufi-rock band group in Pune called Alif, has already won hearts with his performances in MTV's Coke Studio and on stage. With Muneem, features Kashmir's MC Kash (a rapper who shot to fame during 2010 public unrest with his song 'I protest'). Although Rap music originates from the West, Sufi form of music, which is essentially a devotional one, has its origins in the Indian sub-continent, deriving inspiration from some great poets such as Rumi, Bulleh Shah, Hafiz and Amer Khusrow. Although the singers sing in Kashmiri and English, the reviews are mostly from non-Kashmiris and they seem impressed. The song essentially portrays everyday life in a place of conflict like Kashmir where Sufi music is still going strong. The unique West-Asian music combination will leave you asking for more.
