Gawkadal Massacre Anniversary:City Centre, Adjoining Areas Shut21 January 2017
Srinagar: Life in city centre Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas was affected on Saturday due to resistance leadership-sponsored strike call to mark 27th anniversary of Gawkadal massacre here. On this day in 1990, more than 50 civilians were butchered by Para-military Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men after they resorted to indiscriminate firing on a procession in Gawkadal area of Lal Chowk in Srinagar district. Shops and other business establishments remained closed in Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Maisuma, Gawkadal, Residency Road and Abi Guzar areas. Authorities had deployed heavy contingents of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas to thwart any protest demonstration. Scores of resistance leaders and activists affiliated with different organizations including Hurriyat Conference (G), Hurriyat Conference (M), Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, People's Political Party, Islamic Political Party, Democratic Political Movement visited Gawkadal and offered special prayers in favour of those killed by armed forces. The resistance groups' activists organized protest marches to mark the day.
