Kulgam Operation Called Off After Protests

Kulgam: The troops called off combing and search operation in some areas of south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Wednesday evening after protests by the local population. The forces cordoned off Najar Mohallah and Gaadi Mohallah of Mohammad Pora village in Kulgam at around 4:45 pm without any announcement. 'The force personnel entered into the houses to conduct searches. They beat the inmates in the houses including the women,' the locals said. The youth came out on roads and pelted stones on the force personnel, who resorted to heavy teargas shelling and heavy baton charge to disperse the protestors. As the protests continued, the force personnel called off the operation. The locals said about a dozen people sustained injuries in the forces action. Two girls (daughters of Mohammad Yousuf Bhat) were injured in the forces action. One of the girl had sustained head injury and was shifted to hospital, where she received 15 stitches in head, they said. During the operation, a guest, two brothers, Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat (20), Suhail Ahmad Bhat (18), and Junaid Ahmad Bhat were detained. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kulgam, Mohammad Shafi Darzi said eight injured were brought to the hospital for treatment. 'They were given first aid. One of injured boy was hit by pellets in eye. He was later shifted to District Hospital Anantnag,' he said.
