Kupwara: Four militants and three Indian Army soldiers were killed in a gunfight that began Saturday afternoon along the Line of Control near the army's Nowgam base camp in Kupwara district. Official sources in the army said that a group of non-local infiltrators tried to sneak into this side of the LoC on Saturday afternoon. The army soldiers posted in the area challenged them, resulting in a gunfight. Army officials said two militants and two soldiers of the 4-1 GR were killed in the gunfight on Saturday, and after the operation was suspended for the night, hundreds of army soldiers from different companies launched a search operation on Sundaymorning. After about 12 hours, the soldiers faced heavy firing coming from the snow-bounded forests and in this gunfight two more militants were killed while a solider sustained grave injuries. The soldier succumbed on the way to hospital. An army officer posted at the Nowgam base camp said that the search operation is still on and the army believes that some more militants are alive in the area. He said that the army has not yet been able to retrieve the bodies of the militants because of inclement weather and the snow-covered landscape. Srinagar-based spokesperson of the Indian Army, Col Rajash Kalia, confirmed the killing of three soldiers and four militants. He said that the search operation is still continuing and the army has recovered four weapons from the site of the gunfight.
