Centre, State Spending Crores On Separatist Leaders, Alleges RTI Activist

Jammu: A Jammu based RTI activist, Rohit Choudhary has alleged that the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government is not disclosing the expenditure done on Kashmiri separatist leaders for the last two years, who speak against India while the state government has given Z security cover to them. The activist alleged that the state government has denied information on the plea that it cannot be given because of threat perception to these leaders. Rohit Choudhary alleged that while Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been provided security cover by the government, he speaks pro-Pakistan language and congratulates their cricket team also. 'We cannot tolerate this, we are tax payers and our money is spent on their security related expenditure. The government should immediately withdraw the security cover to all Hurriyat Conference leaders, who speak against our country,' demanded Choudhary. SEPARATISTS PROVIDED SECURITY COVER: According to the intelligence sources, at least eight Hurriyat Conference leaders have been provided security cover in the Kashmir Valley, except Syed Ali Shah Geelani. All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leaders, who have been provided security cover, include Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Bilal Lone, Molvi Abbas Ansari and AB Gani Bhat. Sources said the government provided security to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq after his father, Mirwaiz Farooq was killed in 1990 by terrorists at his residence in Srinagar. It may be recalled that two years back, on April 1, 2015, the state government had disclosed in the Assembly that over Rs 506.75 crore were spent on the security cover of 1472 political activists including Kashmiri separatists leaders in the state in the last five years. The state government at that time informed the Assembly that during this year, an amount of Rs 118.63 crore was spent on security of 1472 political activists in the atate and in 2010-11, the amount spent was Rs 85.95 crores. While in 2011-12, Rs 93.70 crore was spent on security cover of political activists, in 2015 the state government informed that the total expenditure incurred on security of political activists in 2012-13 touched Rs 101.06 crore and it was Rs 107.06 crore in 2013-14. MONEY SPENT ON SALARIES OF PSOs ALSO: The government said that the money includes expenditure on salaries of Personal Security Officers (PSO) and guards provided to political activists, the fuel used in the security vehicles and rent of hotel accommodation provided to them. An amount of Rs 149.92 crore was spent as salary to PSOs in last five years. The salary of guards is Rs 309.35 crore, expenditure on fuel in security vehicles is Rs 26.41 crore and rent of hotel accommodation is Rs 20.89 crore. The Assembly data disclosed that Srinagar has the highest number of political activists at 804 while Jammu region has 637 and least number of 31 belong to the cold region of Ladakh. Sources said that 440 political activists including 294 uncategorised political activists have been provided secured hotel accommodation.
